BREEDING

AKC German Shepherd Breeders in Florida

Are you looking to bring your female German Shepherd to our AKC German shepherd breeders in Florida? If so, you need to reach out to Von Calvo German Shepherds before she is in season/heat to talk and go over all the details.
We have made a name for ourselves through the quality of our breeding and the certified German Shepherd puppies our studs are able to produce. To make sure we are doing the right thing by our dogs and your dogs, there are several rules and provisions we ask you to follow. They include:

1. You must test your female for Canine Brucellosis (Brucella).
If your female has Brucella, she may be able to get pregnant, but the puppies will more than likely die before being delivered. It could also put the female's life at risk and infect the male German Shepherd stud and make him sterile for life.

Even if your female has never been bred, she can still contract this severe disease through other means, including contaminated pee. This test can be performed two weeks prior to—or on—her first day of heat (bleeding). Results are usually available within one day.
2. You must test your female for bacteria (cervical culture and sensitivity).

This test can be performed a couple of weeks before her heat, but no later than her first day of heat (bleeding), as this test result usually takes about 3-5 days. If bacteria are found, she has to be treated with antibiotics for at least one week.

This test must be cervical (inside the uterus) and not vaginal. Many vets do a vaginal smear or cytology, but this does not tell us what is inside the uterus—where the embryos will develop. This information is crucial as it will let you know if she can get pregnant. Many vets simply do not know about this or don't understand it.

These tests (1 & 2) will help her with conception and to avoid losing the litter due to complications caused by infections. It will also protect the studs from contracting and spreading diseases.

Please, you must show proof in your paperwork from the vet that the tests were done to the female in question. Ask your vet to put the dog's name, tattoo, and microchip # in the test results or receipt. Should you need an exception, call or email us.

3. You must test your female for progesterone levels.
This test should be performed around the 8th-10th day after your female has started bleeding. This lets us know when ovulation begins so that we can breed her for a better conception rate and a bigger litter of German Shepherd puppies.

The LH test (luteinizing hormone) is the most accurate test available, but it requires you to test daily, starting eight days after bleeding, around the same time every day. When the numbers begin to go up, ovulation begins about 24 hours after. If your female had problems getting pregnant in the past, we highly recommend this test.

Furthermore, ask your vet to check for "cornification or cornified cells" before doing progesterone. If there is no cornification seen in the smear, do not do the progesterone, as you will have to re-test. We recommend you use IDEXX Labs for the most accurate/expedited readings. Call (800) 551-0998 or tell your vet to send the test to IDEXX Labs.

4. All tests and payments have to be brought before breeding.
If the tests are not done on time, we will only breed artificially; since we cannot take the risk of exposing our studs to a possible infection. If the dogs do not tie at all, and you do not want artificial insemination done, your money will be given back. Tell us clearly before trying if you do not agree with any of these terms.

An outside tie is considered a tie unless you let us know beforehand. We can do the artificial insemination for free, or you may choose to go to the vet at your own expense.

5. After the whelping, contact us to give you the proper information to register the litter.
If all tests are done correctly, and your female doesn't get pregnant, we will breed her on her next heat at no extra charge. If she doesn't get pregnant for reasons other than the breeding (no progesterone test performed, no culture performed, etc.) this is your responsibility, and a different breeding will have to be scheduled.

6. Your female will be bred twice if she is receptive/allows the male).
Sometimes after the first breeding, the female tightens up or is no longer receptive to the male. Obviously, there is nothing we can do about that. If you do everything we ask you to do before breeding, your female should get pregnant with just one breeding. Many times we have experienced ten pups in only one mating.

7. Please make a reservation for your breeding ASAP.
If you reserve, you will be first for the breeding of your female when she is ready.

8. Purchasing semen for your female.
Chilled ($500) and frozen ($750) semen can be shipped to you (charges to extract, prepare, and send the semen to you via FedEx/UPS priority). If your female does not get pregnant using artificial insemination, it may be due to your vet not timing her correctly or performing the proper testing. Make sure you know your vet's qualifications when it comes to handling the insemination process.

9. Free breeding policy if your dog does not get pregnant.
If your female does not get pregnant, we will breed her for free in her next heat. All terms previously mentioned before still apply. The free stud stays with the same female, but if we agree to allow you to use it with a different female, all testing will need to be performed again for the new dog.

If you want to try artificial insemination, you will have to pay for all shipping and vet charges. What is free is the stud semen fee.

10. What happens if a stud is not available?
If a stud is not available for the guarantee breeding, we will split the price paid initially, and you may use it for another stud. If all the proper testing is done—including the timing/progesterone test—your female will get pregnant. Yes, there are times a female does not, but this is why we offer our guaranteed/free stud.

We are not responsible for lost paperwork or shipping company mishandling of the semen.

These are the terms to breed to our studs, and they are subject to change at any time. Even if you do not sign this breeding contract, once you breed to our studs or receive a semen shipment, you acknowledge you are aware of it and will abide by the terms set forth.
If you do not agree with these terms, do not use our studs. Should any legal dispute arise, Miami-Dade County Courts will have jurisdiction over the matter. Thank you for your interest in our breeding services. Contact us if you have any additional questions.
